The Physical Activity and Lifestyle Professional (Lifestyle Coach) possess the required competences to develop and deliver professional products/ interventions aimed at improving a client's health across a wide range of lifestyle factors. The PAL professional operates in the areas of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in a range of long term conditions. Interventions aim to enhance the PANSAS lifestyle factors with an emphasis on physical activity. These one-dimensional or combined lifestyle interventions target individuals (one-to-one counselling and/or motivational interviewing) or groups (intervention mapping). The settings where the interventions are offered are the places where clients spend most of their time namely: the workplace, the healthcare setting and leisure-time/sport venues.
The European Bachelor in Physical Activity and Lifestyle is taught in English.
The European Bachelor in Physical Activity and Lifestyle aims the training of physical activity technicians (Lifestyle Coach) with the necessary skills to develop and provide professional products that promote the health of clients by changing a set of behaviors associated with lifestyle (e.g. physical activity, eating habits, smoking, alcohol consumption and stress).
The competences in health enhancing physical activity, one-on-one counselling and nutrition, make this professional capable to fight against the most basic reasons for chronic diseases in modern societies (e.g. obesity, diabetes type 2 and cardiovascular diseases).
The European Bachelor in Physical Activity and Lifestyle (3 years, 180 ECTS) is structured in the six thematic semesters:
1st Semester (Basic Semester) - students have to know and understand the relations between lifestyle factors and health, as well as, the PAL profession and the conceptual theory used; 2nd Semester (Health Enhancing Physical Activity) - students have to know and understand about physical activity programs (e.g. fitness group activities; cardio fitness; strength training; outdoor activities) suitable for different target groups (e.g. children; adults; seniors) and health conditions (e.g. obesity; hypertension; cardiovascular disease); 3rd Semester (Changing Behaviour) - students have to know and experience basic counselling skills (e.g. motivational interviewing) in order to help clients to change for a healthier lifestyle; 4th Semester (Nutrition) - students have to know and understand about healthy nutrition and how to help clients changing their eating habits; 5th Semester (Entrepreneurship) - students have to know and focus their attention on possible job scenarios and on the discussion about appropriated policies and intervention strategies accordingly with different work environments; 6th Semester (Final Project) - students have to develop a project which integrate all the program contents.
This Bachelor will run simultaneously in other countries and higher education institutions in Europe, with the purpose of stimulating the exchange of students and teachers. For this reason this professional specialized in lifestyles have an international orientation and an entrepreneurial attitude toward the European market, since the recognition of their professional skills will be facilitated by the award of a joint certification set by these institutions. The integration in the labour market will be guaranteed by a tutored internship in the last semester.
